Hashtag: This has formerly been called the ‘pound sign.’ This symbol (#) is used usually on Instagram and Twitter (along with other social media sites) as a way to categorize pictures, tweets, or other pieces of content.

Simply place a # in front of a word or phrase and that piece of content will show up with others in that hashtag on the social media platform.
